Children waiting longer – latest statistics show

The latest data from the Department for Education* shows number of children waiting for adoption has increased for the third consecutive year, to 2,910 in March 2025

The data also shows there was a shortfall of 750 adopter families as of March 2025, an almost threefold increase in a year.

Over the same period, the number of children with a placement order (a court order that allows a local authority to place a child with prospective adopters) grew by 13%, with a 55% rise in the number waiting over a year.
