LGBTQ+ inclusive Books for children

From books with main characters who are LGBTQ or exploring their gender identity or sexual orientation to stories of kids and teens with gay friends or parents, these books portray many aspects of the LGBTQ experience.  This great list from Common Sense media offers a great list of books for parents to choose from such as:

  • Heather Has Two Mommies (age 3+) – Lively illustrations add charm to inclusion classic. By Lesléa Newman (2017)
  • Introducing Teddy: A Gentle Story About Gender and Friendship (age 3+) – Gentle teddy bear tale about gender identity. By Jessica Walton (2016)
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Presents: A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo  (age 4+) – Cute story of two boy bunnies who get married. By Jill Twiss (2018)
  • I Am Jazz (age 4+) – Sweet, straightforward story of young transgender girl. By Jessica Herthel, Jazz Jennings (2014)

We also love And Tango Makes Three (ages 4+) by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell.

At the penguin house at the Central Park Zoo, two penguins named Roy and Silo were a little bit different from the others. But their desire for a family was the same. And with the help of a kindly zookeeper, Roy and Silo got the chance to welcome a baby penguin of their very own.
