Can I adopt if I have a mental health condition?

Many people go through periods of stress, depression, or anxiety at different points in their lives. If this reflects your experience, we encourage you to talk with us about it during your adoption enquiry. We understand these conversations can feel difficult, but our aim is simply to understand how your mental health has been managed.

Having experienced mental health challenges does not exclude you from adopting. What matters most is how these experiences have been addressed and how they may influence your ability to care for a child. We’re here to listen, support, and guide you throughout the process.

Some individuals live with long-term mental health conditions that are well managed with medication. If this applies to you, we’ll have a supportive conversation as part of your adoption journey. A full medical assessment with your GP will help us understand how your health may impact your ability to care for a child.

Our primary focus is always on your capacity to meet a child’s needs consistently and lovingly. We’ll also consider how the emotional demands of adoption might affect your wellbeing. Please don’t worry—our role is to support and guide you every step of the way.
