A response to the recent BBC /Adoption UK survey:
At Adoption Matters we believe that children’s welfare and needs are paramount and we aim for them to grow up in a secure and loving family who will best meet their long-term needs and who can help them to reach their full potential.
In order to do this and in recognition of the lifelong impact of adoption, Adoption Matters provides a comprehensive adoption service for all the parties involved, offering support, training and advice to prospective adopters, adoptive families, children, adopted children and the wider family support network.
Adoption offers many children this option and brings joy to many families across the country each year. The recent survey carried out with Adoption UK for File on 4 endorses this: nine out of ten people who responded are glad that they adopted.
Adoption Matters Chief Executive Norman Goodwin CBE, commented: “Adoption Matters as a voluntary agency realise the challenges of adoption and the importance of providing life long support to our families, which we have been doing so for decades. However, we also recognise the joys of adoption, how it offers so many families and children loving and fulfilling lives. Last year 49% of children we placed fell into the ‘harder to place*’ category and we understand offering on-going support and training is vital, as well as providing adopters with as much in-depth information about the children’s history and background. We offer services to adopted children and their families throughout their childhood, through to their teens and well into adulthood. Our disruption rate is below the average 3%, which itself, is a very low percentage across the country.
Last year alone, our Centre for Adoption Support, which offers bespoke training based on each families individual needs, worked with 304 families and 714 adopters & professionals attended workshops offered ranging from parenting teenagers, child to parent violence and therapeutic parenting methods.
Adoption and indeed parenthood isn’t easy, it is often very challenging, but at Adoption Matters you have the knowledge that you are not alone, support and advice is always available”.
